In 2015, Redbox reported an annual revenue of 1.76 billion U.S. dollars, which was the company’s third successive year of revenue decreases. Redbox and its parent company, Outerwall, were sold in 2016 and Redbox-specific revenue figures have not been released since.
Home video
The introduction of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services has all but rendered video rental a thing of the past. Disc rentals have fallen continuously over the past few years, and companies like Blockbuster and Redbox who once dominated the rental market have either gone out of business or been forced to change their model entirely. Physical home video revenues pale in comparison to their electronic counterparts, while SVOD revenues have grown to nearly 50 billion U.S. dollars per year. In an age where vast libraries of movies and TV shows can be accessed at a moment’s notice, for many consumers there simply isn’t a need for physical locations or disc rental anymore. Despite the decline of its physical products, the home video industry is arguably stronger than ever, albeit in a different format than ever before.
Video consumption
On-demand methods for video consumption have made it easier and more convenient for people to access their entertainment on a weekly and sometimes even daily basis. In addition to the added convenience, SVoD platforms such as Netflix have also added to the overall amount of content available, thanks to their growing original content departments.
