This statistic displays the profitability of small and medium enterprises (SME) in the construction sector in the United Kingdom (UK) in the second quarter of the years between 2014 and 2018. The year with the highest share of SMEs that made a profit was 2017, at 79 percent. In the following year this share declined to 74 percent and the share of SMEs not knowing or refusing comment was the highest throughout the five years recorded.

In order to qualify for interview, SMEs had to meet the following criteria in addition to the quotas by size, sector and region:
Not 50%+ owned by another company;
Not run as a social enterprise or as a not for profit organisation;
Turnover of less than £25m
The respondent was the person in charge of managing the business’s finances. Data was collected via interview.
Previous annual sample sizes: 1,811 (2014), 1,815 (2015). Sample sizes since 2016 was 4,500.
