This statistic shows the percentage of people who identified with a political party in Great Britain from 1997 to 2012, by party. In 2012, the Labour party had the most people who identified with them. This was generally the case over the 15 year period, with the exception of 2008, 2009 and 2010 - a year which saw the Conservatives, with the help of the Liberal Democrats, regain power after a three term dominance of the Labour party. The largest percentage increase during this period was for people who identified with no political party. This group more than doubled in size over the 15 years detailed here.
Percentage of people who identify with a political party in Great Britain (GB) from 1997 to 2012, by party
* Number of respondents: 2012: n = 3,072 (weighted); 2011: n = 3,309 (weighted); 2010: n = 3,294 (weighted); 2009: n = 3,420 (weighted); 2008: n = 4,484 (weighted); 2007: n = 4,124 (weighted); 2006: n = 4,290 (weighted); 2005: n = 4,268 (weighted); 2004: n = 3,199 (weighted); 2003: n = 4,432 (weighted); 2002: n = 3,435 (weighted); 2001: n = 3,287 (weighted); 2000: n = 3,426 (weighted); 1999: n = 3,143 (weighted); 1998: n = 3,146 (weighted); 1997: n = 1,355 (weighted) In this statistic, no party identification (‘None’) only includes those who explicitly deny that they identify with a party. It excludes those saying “don’t know”, or giving some other answer other than naming a party. This, together with the effects of rounding and weighting, means that percentages will not always add to 100 percent.
