In China, young people aged below 35 years were estimated to account for over half of the social network userbase in 2019. As the government planned to increase the internet penetration rate in villages and small towns, where the older generation made up a large proportion of the rural population, the share of social network users aged over 54 years was projected to rise to 17.4 percent by 2023.
