South Africa's proved reserves of coal amounted to roughly 9.9 billion metric tons in 2020. During the period in consideration, anthracite and bituminous reserves presented a trend of decline, with figures dropping by more than 20 billion metric tons. South Africa consumes approximately 75 percent of the coal it produces. Its largest coal deposits are found in the Ecca Group, covering approximately two-thirds of the country.
