In 2022, China produced a total of 325 million metric tons of lignite, making it the largest lignite producing nation worldwide by a considerable margin. Indonesia, which ranked second that year, produced 140 million metric tons of lignite.
Lignite, also known as brown coal, is a sedimentary rock formed by naturally compressed peat. With a carbon content of 25 to 35 percent, it is the lowest rank of coal due to its low heat content compared to other forms such as hard coal/anthracite.
