The reserve assets of the European Central Bank (ECB) grew overall during the period from 1999 to 2023, despite some fluctuations. The peak was reached in 2023, with reserve assets amounting to approximately 86.66 billion euros.
Reserve assets are the capital held back from investment in order to meet possible demands. They are designed to supplement reserves of gold and convertible currencies used to maintain stability in the foreign exchange market. Reserve assets can be used for foreign trade intervention and to finance trade deficits.
