Wine consumption varies considerably from state to state in the United States. The District of Columbia had the highest per capita consumption of wine in 2013, at 25.7 liters. The state with the lowest per capita wine consumption in that year was West Virginia at 2.4 liters.
California Wine Industry
The overwhelming majority of American wine industry production is attributed to the state of California. In 2017, 575.77 million gallons of bottled wine were produced in California. The runner up, New York, only produced 31.38 million gallons of bottled wine in that year. As of 2019, California was home to over 4,500 wineries. Some of the most famous wine producing regions in California include Napa County, Sonoma County, and Paso Robles.
Wine Consumption in the U.S.
In 2016, Americans drank about 949 million gallons of wine, an increase from the previous year when wine consumption amounted to 922 million gallons. Table wine is the most popular category of wine in the United States, followed by champagne and sparkling wine. What constitutes “table wine” varies from country to country, but in the U.S. it often refers to non-sparkling, unfortified wine with less than 14 percent alcohol by volume.
