The coal mining industry employed 25838 people in the Appalachian region in 2022, of which around 74 percent worked in underground mines. Since 2010, the minority of the coal mine employees in the region worked in surface mines. During the period in consideration, coal-mining employment in the Appalachian region presented a trend of decline, with figures peaking in 2011, at some 60.2 thousand employees.

including office workers. Excludes preparation plants with less than 5,000 employee hours per year, which are not required to provide data. This statistic was assembled using several editions of the report.
