Electricity was used as heating fuel by 52 percent of all new housing units completed in the United States in 2023, being the first year that surpassed gas as the most common heating. Gas is the 2nd most common heating type built in new houses, while oil is no longer introduced as an option. Electricity as a heating fuel has slowly grown in popularity over the last few years, with a notable increase since 2018.
