This statistic represents the total amount of PET bottles that are available on shelves in the United States and the weight that is collected for recycling in the United States between 2000 and 2017. In 2017, there were some 5.91 billion pounds of bottles for sale to consumers but only 1.73 billion pounds of PET containers were actually collected for recycling.
