The number of terrorist attacks in Iraq decreased tremendously in recent years. In 2020, around 629 terrorist attacks were recorded in Iraq. By comparison, about 6,608 attacks occurred in 2006. Iraq was the country with the sixth-most terrorist attacks in 2020 but was not included in the top ten countries with the highest fatalities worldwide in 2020. 563 people died due to terrorist attacks in Iraq in 2020.

Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or ideological goal, and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).
