As of October 2024, Mia Mottley, prime minister of Barbados, was the longest-serving female head of government in office. In modern history, Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh is the longest-serving female head of government, but she resigned in August 2024 following protests against her rule. The number of female political leaders worldwide has risen over the past decades, particularly from 2008 to 2010.
