In 2023, the northeastern region of Brazil had the highest prevalence of food insecurity in the country, with approximately 16 percent of households reporting moderate or severe food shortages. The southern region had the lowest level of severe food insecurity at roughly two percent of households.

The source considers three types of food insecurity:
Mild food insecurity, where there is evidence of concern about access to food in the future and the quality of food in the household is already compromised and residents or adults in the family have adopted strategies to maintain a minimum amount of food for their members;
Moderate food insecurity means that residents, especially adults in the family, had to live with quantitative food restrictions during the reference period;
Severe food insecurity means that, in addition to the adult members, the children, if present, also experience severe food deprivation, which may reach its most acute expression, hunger.
