In 2023, the carbon capture capacity in the Asia-Pacific region was close to nine million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). This figure represents an increase of almost seven times since 2014.
Carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) capacity in the Asia-Pacific region from 2014 to 2023
(in million metric tons)
Carbon capture is the process of collecting carbon dioxide emissions that come from various sources, especially factories and power plants, to stop it from getting into the atmosphere. This is an important part of efforts to fight climate change by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The captured carbon dioxide can then be compressed and transported to a storage site for later usage. Captured carbon dioxide can be utilized in several applications, including chemical production and mineralization.
