As of October 2023, 43 percent of Japanese nationals who had been residing outside of Japan for at least three months were located in Asia. By contrast, almost 49 percent of Japanese residents with a permanent residence permit lived in Central America.

Long-term residents refer to individuals who reside in another country for a duration of three months or more with the intention of relocating back to Japan.
Permanent residents refer to individuals who moved their base of residence to another country and obtained permanent resident status.
Figures are based on the information gathered by Japanese diplomatic government offices abroad and do not include descendants of Japanese emigrants (nikkeijin) who do not hold Japanese citizenship. People with multiple citizenships are counted.
