In 2020, there were 376,400 full-time equivalent (FTE) nursing and social work employees in assisted living communities* in the United States. Of these, three-quarters were aides, while just 12.5 percent were registered nurses. The share of nursing workforce has decreased in the past two years.

*Residential care communities are defined by the CDC as:Â "Includes assisted living communities and other residential care communities (for example, personal care homes, adult care homes, board care homes, or adult foster care) that meet the study eligibility criteria."
The NCAL (National center for assisted living) also uses CDC residential care community data.
