In 2020, eight in ten assisted living community providers* were for-profit organizations, while just over one in six were non-profit organizations. The share of for-profit assisted living providers increased slightly compared to 2018.

*Residential care communities are defined by the CDC as:Â "Includes assisted living communities and other residential care communities (for example, personal care homes, adult care homes, board care homes, or adult foster care) that meet the study eligibility criteria."
The NCAL (National center for assisted living) also uses CDC residential care community data.
