In 2023, the largest contributions to novel carbon dioxide removals (CDR) worldwide were from biochar, at 0.79 MtCO₂. Removals from biochar almost quadrupled between 2021 and 2023. The second-largest contributor to novel CDR in 2023 was bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, or BECCS, at roughly 0.5 MtCO₂. Removals from this method have remained relatively stable since 2020. Combined, biochar and BECCS currently account for more than 95 percent of novel CDR.
Annual carbon dioxide removals (CDR) from novel techniques worldwide from 2020 to 2023, by method
(in metric tons of CO₂ per year)
Novel CDR: All other methods, storing captured carbon in the lithosphere (geological formations), ocean or products. Generally at a TRL below 8–9, these methods are currently deployed at smaller scales. Examples include Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS), biochar and ocean alkalinization.
