In 2023, around 21 percent of impersonation cases in the United States involved cryptocurrency payments. This figure represents an increase since 2020 when the share of cryptocurrency payments in impersonation cases was six percent.

Figures are based on reports to the FTC Consumer Sentinel Network classified as business imposter or government imposter. Reports provided with Sentinel data contributors and reports that did not indicate a contact method, and payment methods classified as "other", are excluded.
