In 20 major cities worldwide, a high share of the consumers counts as middle class and above. In Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, for instance, 100 percent of the population earned at least the equivalent of the highest 40 percent of global income earners as of 2022 in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms. By comparison, the same number was below 50 percent in Cape Town.
