In 2023, Mongolia's lignite production amounted to a total of nearly 10 million metric tons, making it the 18th-largest lignite producing nation worldwide.
Lignite, also known as brown coal, is a sedimentary rock formed by naturally compressed peat. With a carbon content of 25 to 35 percent, it is the lowest rank of coal due to its low heat content compared to other forms such as hard coal/anthracite.
