In 2023, almost 6,950 hours of load shedding occurred in South Africa. This was significantly higher than the previous year, which reported 2,400 hours of power cuts in the country. During 2023, Eskom (South Africa's state-owned power utility) implemented stage six load shedding to prevent the collapse of the national power grid.

Load shedding is controlled power cuts for a set period of time due to not having enough power capacity to fulfil demand. This aims to reduce the load on the power grid to avoid a total blackout.
Stage 1:1000 MW is shed nationally. Occurs three times over four days for two hours or three times over eight days for four hours.
Stage 2: 2000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs six times over four days for two hours or six times over eight days for four hours.
Stage 3: 3000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs nine times over four days for two hours or nine times over eight days for four hours.
Stage 4: 4000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs 12 times over four days for two hours or 12 times over eight days for four hours.
Stage 5: 5000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs nine times for two hours and three times for four hours over four days.
Stage 6: 6000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs six times for two hours and six times for four hours over four days.
