Instances of book bans in U.S. public schools 2022/23, by ban status
In the 2022/23 school year, there were a total of 3,362 instances of books banned in public schools in the United States, 1,263 of which included books banned from both libraries and classrooms. In comparison, 604 instances were books banned from libraries only and 29 were books banned from classrooms only. 1,466 book banning instances were still pending investigation in that year. Typically, books have been banned due to a range of topics deemed inappropriate for young audiences, such as racism and sexual identity, as well as themes of physical abuse, death, and violence.
