Ever since the start of the pandemic, a significant decline in walking activity has been observed in the United States. As of 2022, the New York-New Jersey-Long Island metropolitan (metro) area had the lead with an average of 39 walking trips being taken daily by every 100 people. The variation is quite significant, even among the leading metro areas, with two metro areas in California recording only two-thirds as many walking trips.
This is the latest reported data in a trend of decline in walking activity, where some areas have witnessed declines of up to nearly 50 percent since 2019 before the pandemic.
