Over the period considered, Portugal registered increasing numbers of refugees, asylum-seekers, and persons of concern to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). By 2021, there were more than 4.8 thousand persons of concern to the UNHCR residing in the country, namely almost 2.7 thousand refugees and 2.2 thousand asylum-seekers. The number of these increased more than 87 percent in comparison to 2020.
