Germany had the highest rate of hospitals implanting cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in 2021 at 8.9 per million population. The lowest amount of ICDs were implanted in Moldova, Belarus, and Slovakia.
An ICD is a device that detects a life-threatening, rapid heartbeat. In case of detecting abnormal heartbeat the ICD sends an electrical shock to the heart which corrects the rhythm. ICDs are used to prevent sudden death in people with arrhythmia, ventricular tachycardia, congenital heart disease or cardiac sarcoidosis
