Some 12 million metric tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits had been sold worldwide as of October 2024. Global sales of CDR credits increased from just 120 metric tons in January 2020 to approximately 10 million metric tons by May 2024. Global CDR sales increased by some four million metric tons that month, mainly due to Microsoft's record-breaking purchase of 3.3 million CDR credits from Stockholm Exergi. There was also a significant jump in CDR purchases in May 2023, which was also a result of CDR purchases made by Microsoft.
Although CDR sales have risen considerably in recent years, they still only accounted for less than one percent of the estimated 10 billion metric tons that need to be removed annually from the atmosphere by 2050.
