The number of mortgage loans for first-time buyers (FTBs) granted in Ireland grew by about 650 in 2023. That was the third consecutive year when the number of mortgages granted to first-time homebuyers increased. In 2023, 25,937 mortgage loans were granted to first-time buyers, up from about 22,286 granted in 2022. The sole year that witnessed a minor decline in the number of loans was 2020, with the number of loans granted amounting to approximately 18,700, a decrease from 21,400 in 2019. Lending to second and subsequent borrowers followed a similar trend.
