Under the current warming scenario of 2.7 degrees Celsius, about 68 percent of the world's glaciers are expected to disappear by the year 2100. However, if warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the share of glacial mass lost worldwide would be reduced to some 49 percent. Melting glaciers can have several consequences, such as contributing to sea levels rising, affecting weather patterns or releasing ancient pathogens trapped in the ice.
