According to a survey conducted in South Korea in early 2024, one in four respondents aged 55 years and older stated that they used KakaoTalk, a messenger app, as a source for news, making them the age group with the highest share of people to do so. The overall use of KakaoTalk as a news source fell to 19 percent that year, making it the second most used social media or messaging platform used for accessing news behind YouTube.
