Replacing a gas furnace with a heat pump in California reduced on average 72 percent of carbon emissions from day one in 2021. In some U.S. states heat pumps had a much smaller impact on the reduction of emissions on day one. For example, heat pumps in Wisconsin had on average 12 percent less emissions than gas furnaces. Nevertheless, heat pumps could reduce up to 62 percent of carbon emissions during a 15-year lifespan.
