As of the 2022/2023 fiscal year, only a fraction of the total number of murder and sexual offense cases reported to the South African police was brought to trial by the National Prosecuting Authority. Of the 4,627 sexual offense cases that went to trial, 3,460 ended up with a secure conviction.

The number of cases finalized with a verdict are the criminal cases reported to the police which have gone to court. There are three outcomes:
1) The case is tried and the accused is either found guilty and is convicted or the accused is found not guilty.
2) The prosecution withdraws the case in court before the accused has pleaded guilty or not guilty and the trail has begun. This usually occurs when there is not enough evidence to secure a prosecution.
3) The trial is ongoing and has been part heard.

-Femicide is the intentional killing of a female (or perceived female, based on gender identity) specifically because she is female, whether committed within a domestic relationship, interpersonal relationship or by any other
person.
-Intimate partner femicide is defined as femicide committed by a current or former husband (divorced or
separated), boyfriend (dating or cohabiting), ex-boyfriend or rejected would-be lover.
