Online retailer Digitec Galaxus launched carbon neutral orders back in 2020, to allow online shoppers to compensate for their purchases' carbon footprint. In the twelve months between July 2021 and June 2022, Digitec customers paid extra fees of 1.6 million Swiss francs. The carbon compensation measure led to emissions being reduced by 92,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Country comparisons showed international differences in customer behavior, with German customers placing only eight percent of their online orders via this sustainable option. In turn, carbon-neutral orders were close to 12 percent of the total in Switzerland.
