A survey conducted in 2022 found that almost one-third of the unemployed and economically inactive people in China were at increased risk of developing depression. In comparison, less than one in 30 people in managerial roles were deemed susceptible to depression.
Prevalence of depression risk among the Chinese population in 2022, by occupation
42.5 percent of the respondents were male, while 57.5 percent were female. The average age of the respondents was 36.0 years. 66.6 percent of all respondents lived in urban areas. 47 percent of all respondents were residents in the eastern region, while residents from the central, western, and northeastern regions accounted for 24.4 percent, 23.9 percent, and 4.7 percent respectively.
