A survey conducted in 2022 concluded that low earners were generally more susceptible to depression in China, with 21 percent of people earning less than 2,000 yuan per month reported to have high risk of depression. In comparison, among people with monthly income between 6,000 and 10,000 yuan, less than seven percent were at risk of developing the condition.

42.5 percent of the respondents were male, while 57.5 percent were female. The average age of the respondents was 36.0 years. 66.6 percent of all respondents lived in urban areas. 47 percent of all respondents were residents in the eastern region, while residents from the central, western, and northeastern regions accounted for 24.4 percent, 23.9 percent, and 4.7 percent respectively.
