In 2023, Japan was the world's largest coal importing nation based on value, having imported nearly 42 billion U.S. dollars worth of coal. Meanwhile, China came in a close second place, and was responsible for coal imports amounting to a value of 41.4 billion U.S. dollars that year.
The total global coal imports had a sales value of 219.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, down from 286.7 billion U.S. dollars the previous year.
