While not being heterosexual tends to have a negative impact on the employment rate of Canadian men, the same does not apply to women. Over the 2015-2018 period, the proportion of men aged 25-64 who were employed was lower among gay or bisexual men than among heterosexual men, while the employment rate for lesbians was nearly ten points higher than that of heterosexual women of the same age. In addition, heterosexual and bisexual women were less likely to be employed than lesbian women, heterosexual men, and gay men.
Proportion of population aged 25 to 64 in part-time or full-time employment in Canada between 2015 and 2018, by sexual orientation and gender
The source adds the following information: "Employed population includes people who worked full-time or part-time at a job or business in the week preceding the survey. This includes those who had a job, but were absent for any reason other than a temporary layoff because of business conditions, a seasonal layoff, or having a casual job with no work available." "Sexual orientation in research has been assessed on the basis of sexual behaviour, sexual attraction, or self-identity—each of these three concepts yielding slightly different prevalence estimates. In this table, estimates of sexual orientation are based on the survey question which targeted the concept of identity and provided behaviour-based definitions."
