Of the 423 hate crimes related to the sexual orientation of victims registered by police services in Canada in 2021, almost half involved persons who were strangers to the victim. 43 percent of these crimes were committed by acquaintances of the victims, and eight percent were committed by a family member or intimate partner.
In addition, the number of hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation increased by almost 64 percent in Canada between 2020 and 2021.
