Of the total migrant stock worldwide, i.e. the total number of people living outside their country of origin, the highest number came from Europe and North America, reaching nearly 68 millions as of 2020. Central and South Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean followed behind. There are varying reasons for people to emigrate from their country of origin, from poverty and unemployment to war and persecution.
