In the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, the share of respondents stating that it is very or somewhat important to be born in the respective country in order to be regarded as truly American/British/French/German dropped in all four countries from 2016 to 2020. The drop was most significant in the United Kingdom, where it dropped by 25 percentage points during the period. Still, the share was lowest in Germany, where only one in four stated that it is important to be born in Germany in order to be regarded as truly German.
