A significant amount of the new internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 2022 were displaced in Europe as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that year. Furthermore, conflicts in countries such as South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, and Mozambique have increased the number of new displacements in East and Horn of Africa as well as Southern Africa. Ukraine was the country in the world with the highest number of new internal displacements due to conflict in 2022.
Nigeria and Burkina Faso drives new IDPs in West and Central Africa
West and Central Africa also saw a high increase in the number of IDPs in 2021. An escalation of conflicts in Nigeria and Burkina Faso caused the highest number of new IDPs, but also fighting in Mali and the Central African Republic have caused a high number of new internal displacements.
Number of IDPs worldwide has increased sharply
Worldwide, the total number of IDPs has increased significantly in recent years, reaching over 57 million in 2022. The number started to rise in 2012 after the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War, but war and conflict in Africa are increasingly driving the number of new IDPs, and the Russia-Ukraine war has further increased the number.
