One might assume that young French people saying they are ready to protest would tend to turn away from voting, and that protest political participation would replace a conventional political participation. However, as shown by a study of the Institut Montaigne, it is actually the young people who say they are "not at all" ready to demonstrate, and therefore the least involved in protest political action, who express the most uncertainty about the usefulness of voting. It therefore seems that protest action and voting are not mutually exclusive means, but rather complementary modes of engagement.
