Under the framework of the Program for the Development of the National Electric System (PRODESEN), Mexico plans to increase its national energy capacity by over 55 gigawatts between 2022 and 2036. Combined cycle power plants would account for over 34 percent of the total capacity additions of 16.6 gigawatts between 2022 and 2025. The second main technology by installed capacity will be solar photovoltaics, followed by distributed generation systems to reach remote localities that as of 2022 did not yet have access to power supply. Between 2026 and 2036, total capacity additions will amount to 39.5 gigawatts, of which the largest shares will be from solar PV and wind power sources.
