In France, the share of employees affiliated to a trade union varies significantly depending on whether the employee works in the public or private sector, but also according to age. In fact, it tends to increase with age. Thus, in 2019, 23.2 percent of public sector employees and 11.6 percent of private sector employees over the age of 50 were affiliated with a union, compared with 7.4 and 1.7 percent, respectively, of those under the age of 30.
In France, the rate of unionization, at its peak in 1949, has been gradually declining.
