In France, the proportion of employees belonging to a trade union has been gradually declining over the years. After its peak in 1949, the unionization rate reached its lowest level in the early 1990s. Since then, it seems to have stabilized, and remains at around ten percent.
While any employee in the private sector (companies and associations) or any civil servant can form or join a union, the unionization rate remains strongly correlated with the presence of a union organization in the workplace.
