In 2020, French Guiana was the overseas region with the lowest proportion of the population aged 2 to 24 years enrolled in school. In contrast, 1.4 percent of the population over 30 years of age was enrolled in school, compared to less than one percent in the other regions studied. In all regions, the school enrollment rate drops sharply when the population reaches 18 years of age, and even more so when it reaches 25 years of age.
In comparison, according to figures from the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE), 77.9 percent of French 18-year-olds and 44.6 percent of French 21-year-olds were enrolled in school in 2019.
