Global methane (CH₄) emissions from agriculture amounted to over 3.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2020. Annual CH₄ emissions related to agriculture have increased more than 10 percent since 1990. Enteric fermentation is the biggest source of agriculture methane emissions.
Annual agriculture methane (CH₄) emissions worldwide from 1990 to 2020
(in million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent)
Non-CO₂ emissions are expressed in CO₂ equivalents using 100-year global warming potential values from the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.
