Interregional transmission capacity across the United States is forecast to grow over the following decade. By 2035, transmission capacity is estimated to be the highest under the Infrastructure scenario, which considers building a multiterminal high-voltage DC macrogrid, at some 420 terawatt-miles. Meanwhile, under the All options and No CCS scenarios, interregional transmission capacity would stand at 345 and 329 terawatt-miles, respectively. Both scenarios would allow transmission expansion across all regions. On the other hand, if transmission development is limited exclusively to transmission planning regions, that is under the Constrained scenario, capacity is expected to remain lower, at around 185 terawatt-miles.
Forecast interregional transmission capacity in the United States in 2035, by scenario
(in terawatt-miles)
One terawatt-miles of interregional transmission capacity equals to approximately 330-670 miles of new transmission capacity.
Constrained scenario: transmission development limited to transmission planning regions. All options scenario: transmission development possible across all regions. No CCS scenario: transmission development possible across all regions but not considering carbon capture and storage. Infrastructure scenario: considers establishing a multiterminal high-voltage DC macrogrid.
