The number of discouraged job seekers in Brazil was on an upward trend from 2016 to 2021, increasing from 796,700 in that year to more than 1.37 million. Throughout the period considered, the number of women among the unemployed who were not looking for work was higher than that of their male counterparts, although by 2023 the number had decreased compared to 2012, when there were more than one million discouraged female jobseekers.

The source defines discouraged job-seekers as "those persons of working age who during a specified reference period were without work and available for work, but did not look for work in the recent past for specific reasons (for example, believing that there were no jobs available, believing there were none for which they would qualify, or having given up hope of finding employment)."
